Welcome to my blog about transcending the self. Instead of using the mind to fix or control your world so that you can be happy, there is another way. This blog is about moving your awareness from your limited, egoic-self to your Higher Self in order that you can be the divine expression that you were intended to be.

Many of my beliefs are based on the books "The Untethered Soul" (T.U.S.) by Michael Singer and "Falling into Grace" by Adyashanti. These books describe the path of moving your awareness from the part of you that tries to make your life work (ie, find happiness, security, love...) to the part of you that Witnesses or Watches your life unfold and your reactions to your life. As you become more aware of yourself as the Watcher, and you let go of the energies of the lower self, you will be moving towards greater freedom.

So instead of struggling to make everything go your way in life, why not accept what is (release the need to fix or control people, situations or your mind), open your heart and surrender to That Which Created Life in the first place! In other words, go with the flow of life and watch the amazing miracle that you are blossom! Please join me in choosing to move beyond the limitations of the personal self and to live a life of freedom.

To get the most out of this blog, I suggest that you read the books. I also recommend the CDs by Michael Singer (see the website below). I post on this blog about once a week. If you would like to be notified by email each time I post please send your email address to donnamccullough@cox.net.

Samskaras

The blocked energy from past events will stay stuck inside of you and "Life must now compete with this blocked event for your attention." (T.U.S., p. 52).

Whenever some event does not make it through you will have to spend time processing it in order to try to make sense of it.  Eventually the energies that are blocked will be "pushed out of the forefront of your mind until you are prepared to release them." (T.U.S., p. 53).  First these energies try to release through the mind and then through the heart.  The blocked energy stays stored in the heart and it is called a Samskara.  "A Samskara is a cycle of stored past energy patterns in a state of relative equilibrium.  It is your resistance to experiencing these patterns that causes the energy to keep cycling around itself."  (T.U.S., p. 54).

Michael gives the example of seeing a car that looks like your girl friends car and the people in the front seat are hugging.  If you do not allow yourself to experience and then release the feelings of jealousy or hurt, at some time in the future you may see a similiar car with two people in the front seat hugging and this might stir up the unwanted feelings.

There are many events that have happened in our lives that leave Samskaras.  As you know if you have read further on in the book, these events are stored with pain and they will need to be released by feeling the pain.  However, it is not necessary to sit with this pain for long periods of time.  It is a matter of feeling the pain and moving one's awareness to the witness and with a deep breath letting it go (or letting it be).

I find it interesting that psychologists have come to the same conclusion that wise spiritual beings have known all along...that we do not have to spend long periods of time venting or re-experiencing painful, past experiences.  It is just a matter of touching them and releasing them.

With some feelings I am able to feel them and release them relatively easily and quickly.  Other feelings, however, are harder to release.  In these situations, I notice the feeling, move my awareness to the Observer, take a breath and I let the feeling be.  Acceptance of what is without needing to make it go away.

Notice today when a Samskara is being touched.  Can you allow the feelings to surface?  Can you move your awareness to the Observer and relax into the feeling, knowing that it is a passing energy?

  1. Can a Samskara be a block that is consciously being held onto or is it only feelings that present due to past upsets and they are not allowing one to be present? and if so, how does one easily let go of the reasons holding them back? -d

  2. According to Michael Singer, Samskaras are stored PAST energy patterns. However, the way to unblock oneself is the same regardless of whether the energy is from the past of present. Here are some suggestions to let go of a block that you are consciously holding onto: 1. Set the intention within yourself to let it go (Is there really any reason to hold onto it? You will deal better with the situation once you have let the energy move through you.) 2. ask Spirit to help you let it go, 3. move your awareness to the witness and watch yourself wanting to hold on to the block, then take a breath and let go of your attachment to the blocked energy, 4. ask yourself 'Who am I?' repeatedly until you relize that the roommate is holding onto the energy but you are the neutral observer, not the roommate.

  3. Love that roommate.
